Whether you're wanting to get off on the right paw with your new best friend or your dreams for dog ownership are already drowning in chewed up furniture, endless barking, or threatening growls, I can help. Hi. I'm Melissa Childs and I'm a CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer - Knowledge Assessed). That means you can rest assured that I know my stuff after demonstrating over 300 hours of teaching experience, a comprehensive understanding of dog behavior, and 12 hours of continuing education per year.

And, I promise that I'll never use pain and fear to teach you or your dog! I specialize in helping you address behavior problems and bond with your dog in a way that you'll be proud of and your dog will enjoy. I'll meet with you and your dog in Ottumwa, one-on-one, equipping you to address your dog's specific training needs. Start your puppy off right or help your adult dog build focus and self-control around distractions while learning basic cues like sit, down, stay, leave it, and coming when called.
Services
Intern will learn all elements of training dogs and their owners, beginning with basic manners and puppy training and progressing to more complex behavior problems as the intern demonstrates aptitude and understanding.
This is an unpaid position, focused on developing the intern's knowledge of dog training and teaching techniques.
We do have a paid position available for an individual who develops the ability to train clients and their dogs unsupervised.
Lessons usually last for one hour and we start by meeting once per week.
The number of lessons varies widely with each individual dog and behavior issue but most clients find that after 4-6 lessons they are comfortable continuing the training on their own.
Most clients meet me in their homes or neighborhoods, where the behavior we're working on takes place.
Depending on your dog's needs, we may also meet in a local park, veterinarian's office, dog-friendly store, or other location.
Good Manners Group Class focuses on helping you build a strong foundation for the behaviors you desire in your dog.
Besides learning basic commands like sit, down, stay, leave it, and come, you'll learn how to improve your dog's focus, self-control, understanding of boundaries, and bond with you.
Classes will use positive training methods that help you understand why your dog does what they do and make sure it's the behaviors YOU like that are rewarded and increased.
There is SO MUCH conflicting knowledge out there about dogs and using the wrong techniques or theories can cause big problems for weeks, months, or even years to come.
After watching my clients suffer through behavior problems that could have been avoided so easily, I decided to do something about it.
Sometimes all you need is a little help getting started.
Someone to tell you whether this adoptable dog is the right fit for your family.
Someone to make sure your current dog likes your new one as much as you do.
Why don't you use pinch collars, choke collars, or shock collars?
In the past, trainers often used pain to teach dogs.
Some still do.
Common tools included choke and pinch collars and leash pops (a quick jerk on the leash) were often used in conjunction with these to let a dog know when they did something wrong.
Shock collars were also used, and continue to be used by some trainers to teach compliance off leash and to eliminate unwanted behaviors such as barking.
As the science of dog training has progressed we have learned more effective methods to teach pets more efficiently and without the use of physical pain.
